Description

The Backstory: The box has a clear set of Hanau pseudo hallmarks, which are described as among the silver hallmark study’s most challenging and confusing areas. In fact, the antique silver industry of Hanau chose to mark its output with “fantasy marks.” Mark stamping as practiced in Hanau would have been downright illegal in France,  England, or any other German city where a guild supervised the marking. But Hanau had a long tradition as a free-trade city. With the production of “antique silver,” Hanau found a market niche, which brought its silver manufacturers enormous prosperity and a worldwide reputation. Today, while questionable at birth, this piece is now a legitimate antique.
