About Besamims: A Besamim is used during the Havdalah, a Jewish ritual that marks the end of the holy Sabbath, where a special candle and spice essence are used for blessing. The spice contained in the Besamim is used for smelling and is said to symbolize the passing Sabbath, whose pleasing aroma is breathed in one last time before returning to oneโs daily routine and before the next Sabbath arrives. While any naturally occurring aromatic can be used, cloves are often customary because they retain their aroma for a long time and are historically readily available.
Provenance: Originally from the private collection of a Long Island, New York, USA family. Subsequently sold by World Auction Gallery in October 2022 and then by V.N. Collectibles in 2024.
