Description
Created in 1962, Marc Chagall’s La Baie des Anges (The Bay of Angels) is a lithograph featuring the French coastal landscape and the figure of a siren. Named for the bay along the Mediterranean Sea that extends between Antibes and Nice, the place to which legend says angels guided Adam and Eve after their exile from Eden.
The lithograph features floating figures, a common motif in Chagall’s works. Brightly colored, the siren appears to float above the coast and city in a dreamlike setting, as if she exists in a space set apart from the viewer and the city of Nice.
Facsimile signed on the lower right and pencil numbered on the lower left from an edition of 375. Paper measures approximately 15″ high by 11″ wide, with the image approximately 13″ high by 9″ wide. Recent auction estimate: $350-400.
