Description

155 years old! Early and increasingly rare Minton majolica dish, circa 1869, featuring beautiful strawberry design with detailed fruit leaves and flowers.

“Majolica” is the word used to denote brightly colored, low-fired earthenware commercially introduced by the Minton Company at the 1851 London Exhibition of All Nations to capture the market of the newly emergent “middle class.” There, it created a worldwide sensation which others like Wedgwood began making only after Minton’s patent expired in 1861. Two minor flea bites in the greenery edge with glaze overlay may be slight chips or suggest it may have occurred during production. See close-ups in photos.  Pattern #1330, Diamond impressed registration.
