About Matt Morgan: Matt Morgan was born in England in 1837 and distinguished himself as a talented artist, illustrator, and political cartoonist. He gained fame for his satirical illustrations in prominent British publications, including The Illustrated London News and Fun. Facing professional and political challenges in England, Morgan immigrated to the United States in 1870, seeking new opportunities and creative freedom. After arriving in the United States, he continued his work as an artist and cartoonist before eventually settling in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he founded the Matt Morgan Art Pottery in 1883. Morgan’s diverse artistic background and innovative spirit greatly influenced the distinctive style and celebrated quality of his pottery.

The Matt Morgan Art Pottery also attracted other talented artists who contributed to its reputation for artistic excellence. Notable artists who worked with Morgan included Laura Fry, who later became an influential figure at Rookwood Pottery, and Mary Louise McLaughlin, a pioneer of underglaze decoration. These artists, along with others in Morgan’s studio, helped shape the distinctive and highly collectible character of Matt Morgan pottery.
