Description

William Moorcroft (1872-1945) stands out as one of the most renowned potters of the early twentieth century. His artistic journey began at James MacIntyre & Co., where he honed his skills in pottery amidst the flourishing Arts and Crafts movement of the late Victorian era. He was eventually forced out by MacIntyre out of fear that Moorcroft’s work would overshadow the company’s other product lines.

He was quickly bankrolled by Liberty & Co. and quickly became known as one of the world’s greatest artists and potters.

Rejecting the concept of mass production, Moorcroft’s creations caught the eye of royalty and collectors alike. He believed passionately in the idea that art should be woven into the fabric of everyday lifeโ€”functional, beautiful, and accessible to the wider public. As he once expressed in a heartfelt letter to his daughter in 1930, โ€œImagine if everyone dedicated themselves to crafting beauty in their world and fostering the arts of peace; what a remarkable place it would be.โ€ This philosophy drove him to create pieces that were not just visual delights but also touched people’s lives – then and now.
