About Richard Howson Pottery: Richard Howson Pottery occupies a distinct and significant, though often overlooked, position within the history of English Arts and Crafts ceramics. It is essential to distinguish this pottery from the better-known William Taylor Howson and his associated enterprises. Although available historical records on Richard Howson Pottery remain limited, evidence confirms its operation during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, coinciding with the zenith of the Arts and Crafts movement in England (circa 1880–1920). Based in England, Richard Howson’s workshop maintained a deliberately modest scale, rooted in local traditions. His creations exemplify the core values of the Arts and Crafts ethos: superior craftsmanship, purity of form, and a reverence for natural motifs. The hand-thrown and hand-decorated pieces produced under his name underscore a conscious rejection of industrial mass production in favor of individual artistry and time-honored techniques. Surviving examples are rare, and the pottery’s works are frequently misattributed to more prominent contemporaries due to stylistic affinities. Nevertheless, the distinctive marking on this piece conclusively identifies it as a rare and authentic product of Richard Howson Pottery.
