An early Weller Louwelsa hand-painted vase depicting a blossom flower in low relief. Glazed with brown ground, issued circa 1893-1902.

About Weller Pottery: Founded in 1872 by Samuel Augustus Weller, this Ohio-based pottery was first known for its simple stoneware jars and clay flowerpots, but by 1893, began making art pottery for which it became known worldwide. Its first prominent line was the high gloss floral Louwelsa. Other popular lines followed including Dickens Ware, inspired by author Charles Dickens; hand-decorated Eocean type with flowers, figures, and fruit under the glaze; Knifewood, metallic Sicard; and nature-adorned Baldin, Forest, and Woodcraft lines. Artists of Weller Pottery include John Lessell, Jacques Sicard, Dorothy England Laughhead and Charles Babcock Upjohn.
The company’s marks appear on the bottom of most of their pieces and are stamped or hand-incised. Among them were: ย โWELLERโ, โWellerโ, โWeller Potteryโ and โLOUWELSA WELLERโ.
