About Zsolnay. In the enchanting city of Pรฉcs, Hungary, Miklos Zsolnay launched his namesake factory in 1853, and, over time, transformed stoneware into exquisite artistic treasures. A decade later, his son Vilmos took the reins, infusing innovation that propelled Zsolnay to international acclaim, showcasing dazzling creations at the 1873 World Exposition in Vienna and the 1878 Worldโs Fair in Paris.
In 1893, the factory unveiled porcelain pieces, like these offered here, crafted with the magical eosin glaze, named after the Greek goddess of dawn. This unique process created a light red iridescence that danced with color and light, inspiring Art Nouveau artists and captivating admirers worldwide. By 1914, Zsolnay had become the largest company in Austro-Hungary, a beacon of creativity.
However, challenges arose during World War I, when the factory shifted to military production. Following the war, it faced hardships due to the Serbian occupation and scarce materials. Yet hope arose after the depression, until 1948, when the factory was nationalized and rebranded as the Pรฉcs Porcelain Factory.
Despite these changes, the spirit of Zsolnay endures in the vibrant hues and exquisite forms that continue to mesmerize. Each piece remains a testament to a legacy of artistry and innovation, inviting us to cherish its beauty and history.
